Figs can be grown from seeds, but will not be true to the parent because they are produced sexually. Fig sexuality is very complex, involving three classes of figs, Common, Smyrna and San Pedro types, which can be combined with persistent and non-persistent caprifigs. Half of the offspring will be caprifigs (functionally male) and not edible. The balance will be edible, but the fruit may not be palatable, or, in some cases, not produced at all, or after a long period of juvenility. For these reasons, apart from specific breeding programs, seeds are seldom (if ever) used as a source of fig trees for home or commercial orchard use.
