RECULVER
SYN: FRANCISCAN (089) , MISSION (089), GOURAND NOIR (089)
DESCRIPTION

A very old fig, much travelled. Thought to have come to Reculver on the North Kent coast during the Roman occupation. Definitely taken to America with the early settlers, where it is found at Mission Stations throughout the south. Fruit are large pear shaped, shiny black skin and light strawberry flesh. The flavour is rich and luscious. (089)

RED GOLD
SYN: BA-1
DESCRIPTION

Another synonym for Red/Gold is BA-1. The theory is that someone hijacked this fig from a Texas experimental station and the letters may signify a grid location. I had one of these but had to give it up during a move. Never got to reap the rewards but it is supposedly an excellent fig. I would like to hear from someone who grows this fig as well. (904)

REVERSE
SYN: PANACHE REVERTED
DESCRIPTION

My Panachee tree has two limbs that produce a green only fruit, and a local CRFGer verified that sometimes a limb or tree will "revert" to the fig from which Panachee was previously taken as a sport. It has much less tendency to split than Panachee. In San Diego it tastes identical to Panachee, but ripens 4-6 weeks earlier (even though it is naturally occuring, not grafted) on the same tree. Panachee does not always ripen reliably in my climate, but Reverse does more so. (910)

RUBADO
DESCRIPTION
Bordeaux is a French region which grows many varieties of figs. Condit's Bordeaux is usually and appropriately called Negronne in Bordeaux (after the town of Negronne which is apparently its place of origin) . Giorgio Gallesio coined the Cuore, which means "heart-shaped," in 1817 for the fig already known as Rubado in Liguria. (006)

RUBY 3
DESCRIPTION
There were two Ruby figs, Ruby-3 and Ruby-4. These figs were found by Ruby Law, a member of the Foothill chapter of CRFG. She found an abandoned orchard in Etiwanda where these two figs and others were found. These two were unidentified but must be old varieties. Since we didn't know their identities I called them Ruby-3 and Ruby-4. Ruby-3 is a black fig with a rather coarse pulp texture with good flavor. Dark red in color. (941) First fruited, 2007 season. Flavors of strawberry and cucumber. (910)

She found an abandoned orchard in Etiwanda where these two figs and others were found. These two were unidentified but must be old varieties. Since we didn't know their identities I called them Ruby-3 and Ruby-4. Ruby-4 was early this year and was very tasty. (941) I don't know why, but some years will cause certain figs to thrive exception ally well. Last year [2011] my Ruby-4 suddenly had many brebas and then a bumper second crop which had never happened before. This year [2012], it has so far only an average crop. go figure. (941)
