MARTIN'S ITALIAN UNKNOWN
DESCRIPTION
My Italian Unknown came from 10k south of Bologna, Italy. 2009 is the 4th full season for me. This past winter I root pruned it. This ia a difficult tree for me to get a ripe fruit from: to date, since I have propagated it from a stick. I have had only 1 ripe fruit. Each year they turn reddish and shrivel, never to swell and, then, fall off tree. It does produce a breba crop, but like my other trees in my climate they never amount to anything and they fall or i knock them off all my trees. (1007)

MISSION NC
DESCRIPTION
"Mission Garin Fence". It's a ...multi-trunked fig tree, all of which appear to be the same fig, growing in Garin Regional Park in the hills above (east of) Hayward, CA. It appears to be a Mission-type fig and is certainly more cold-sensitive than most of my figs. When fully ripe in Hayward, it has a unique, rich coconut-like flavor and is not too sweet. It didn't fruit for me last season and, due to its reaction to hard frosts (in the low 20s) last fall, may not fruit again for me this season. (1008)

MONTICELLO PURPLE
DESCRIPTION
The orchards at Monticello were replanted in the early 1980's and this included the replanting of fig trees. They reestablished their fig plantings with six fig trees including: Osborn, Brunswick, Brown Turkey, Angelique, Marseilles, and Green Ischa. In addition to these figs is one that has mysterious origins. This fig tree produces very large purple fruit. A picture taken around 1950 shows that the fig was likely there at that time. There is currently no other evidence to verify the origins. It is only speculation at this point in time that the tree existed before the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation acquired the property in 1923. The name "Monticello Purple" will be used until proper identification can be determined. (1001)
