CHATER GREEN 246
DESCRIPTION
John Chater ... lived a short distance from me (941) and introduced about 10 new pomegranates to the trade. One of his first introductions was Eversweet and my specimen had loads of fruit this year. One of its features is that it is non-staining and it has soft, chewable seeds. All my life the only pomegranate was Wonderful and now there are many more. The fig that he gave me had no name so I named it after him. All that he knew about it was that it came from Greece. Tends to sucker easily. (941) Pomegranate flavor. (910)

COL DE DAME NOIR
DESCRIPTION
It comes to us from Spain under the name of Senyora's Black Collar. A strong tree, with big leaves of type 3 with 5 average lobes. This late variety is cultivated notably in Oriental Pyrenees; the fruits become shriveled there at maturity, without rotting. It is excellent for jams because of the content in sugar exceptional. A handicap however: the insufficient calibre for marketing as fresh fruit. Lady's White Collar and Lady's Grey Collar are second to the Lady's Black Collar only by the color of their skin. COSENZA
DESCRIPTION
[T]hey are delicious. The flavor is sweet with a berry flavor. One of the better figs I've tasted. They look like my Hardy Chicago but larger. The history behind this tree is that it came over around 1905 to Beaver Falls and moved to Ellwood City in 1954. This is an inground tree that wasn't covered last year. It was brought from the Calabria region of Italy, Province of Cosenza. (910)AJ

COTIGNANE
DESCRIPTION
Native of Provence. A strong tree, with a leaf rather small of type 3 in 5 lobes, shallow. This variety is very sensitive to the mosaic virus. Fruits are too small and too fragile for commercial use but recommended for their precocity and savor. They are also excellent dried, and dry naturally on the tree. [Translated from French] (046)

CROISIC
SYN: CORDELIA, ST. JOHN, GILLETTE
DESCRIPTION

The only edible caprifig. Fruits very early. Fruits pale yellow, small, pulp nearly white, without a lot of character and not really that tasty. Tree low, dense, spreading. A fine choice for north coast and Pacific Northwest. (026) (026a) In 1882, Solms-Laubach had discovered Croisic fig trees at Cherbourg and at Le Croisic. Yet the Croisic variety of fig can be found many places within the Bretagne, Pays de la Loire and the BasseNormandie regions of France. Croisic fig trees have very large leaves, about 30 centimeters in diameter, leaves are very round, and most are 5-lobed. The branches of Croisic more so than not tend to become generally twisted around the trunk. The vegetation of the Croisic fig tree is very vigorous, and vegetation grows upward. The fruit of both crops, skin is yellow-green and pulp is white with a touch of amber, the shape of the figs is elongated with a very long neck. Figs of Croisic must be harvested at full ripeness or they will be very bland. Croisic fig trees produce very plentiful crops every year. (910)(AM)

CUORE

DESCRIPTION

Bordeaux is a French region which grows many varieties of figs. Condit's Bordeaux is usually and appropriately called Negronne in Bordeaux (after the town of Negronne which is apparently its place of origin) . Giorgio Gallesio coined the Cuore, which means "heart-shaped," in 1817 for the fig already known as Rubado in Liguria. (006e)
